Drakensberg Grand Traverse - South Africa
Drakensberg Grand Traverse
This is it!
A 200+ kilometer crossing of the Drakensberg escarpment from Sentinel Peak to Bushman’s Nek. No marked trail. No huts. No easy exits. Just a continuous push through one of the wildest mountain ranges in Africa.
This guided traverse is for those who want the real thing - navigation, exposure. weather, and the satisfaction of moving through a landscape that still feels genuinely remote.
What Is This?
We move along the spine of the Drakensberg, staying high on the escarpment for most of the route. The days are long and the terrain shifts constantly as we travel across grassy plateaus, basalt ridgelines, river crossings and sections where route finding matters.
Weather changes quickly. Wind, cold nights, and occasional storms are part of the experience.
There is no fixed path. We navigate as we go!
Why Go Guided?
Finishing comes down to the decisions that we make along the way. The route choice, water access, weather calls, and decisions about the pace.
This is not a place to improvise without experience, but that’s why we’re here.
Trip Overview
Duration: 10 to 14 days
Distance: 200 to 230 km
Elevation: High plateau travel with frequent climbs and descents
Start: Sentinel Peak
Finish: Bushman’s Nek
Daily distances adjust based on weather and group strength. Flexibility is part of the traverse (and the fun)!
What You Can Expect
Continuous remote travel with no resupply
Wild camping every night
Navigation across unmarked terrain
Huge open landscapes with very few people
Complete separation from roads and infrastructure
This is one of the few places left where you can walk for days without seeing anyone else.
Physical Requirements
You should be comfortable:
Hiking 20 to 30 km per day with a full pack
Managing fatigue over 10 or more days
Moving across uneven and sometimes exposed terrain
Handling cold, wind, and shifting weather
If you have done multi day backcountry trips and wanted something harder, this is the next step.
Gear and Load
This is a self supported traverse.
You carry:
All personal gear
Food for the full duration
Shared equipment across the group (I might have your tent, you might have my stove)
You will receive a full packing list and prep guidance before departure.
Safety
This is a remote environment, but it is managed properly.
We have:
Satellite communication at all times
Experienced navigation and decision making
Weather monitoring and contingency planning
Exit routes identified along the way
Best Time to Go
May to September offers the most stable conditions. Cooler temperatures, clearer skies, and fewer storms.
Check trip schedule for up to date information.
Who This Is For
You are not looking for a checklist trek.
You want something less defined in a remote part of the southern hemisphere.
You understand that the reward comes from the effort it takes to complete it.
